What happens in a therapy session?

The initial counseling sessions are a chance for us to get to know each other. We will see if this partnership is a good fit. Together we will explore the reasons you decided to start counseling and identify personal therapy goals.

Therapy isn’t someone telling you how to fix or solve a life problem. Psychotherapy uses proven counseling strategies to help clients identify what matters to them, gain insight, and make lasting changes. Everyone deserves mental health support.

Arrive a few minutes before your first appointment. The building is “The Hamilton Centre”—1415 NC HWY 54, Durham, NC 27707; Building 100, Suite 204. There is a designated parking lot. Please give 24 hours notice if cancelling your counseling appointment. A no show or cancellation within 24 hours will be charged the cost of one counseling session.

How often will I go to counseling?

The length and frequency of therapy is determined by you. However, most people find it helpful to meet once a week, particularly in the beginning. Many clients find reserving the same weekly time especially helpful. We can discuss individual needs when we check in about how the process is going. I want to ensure you find therapy valuable and effective.

How do I get the most out of therapy?

I am glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your time in counseling sessions. Your active participation and commitment is crucial to your success. I suggest you make therapy a high priority in your schedule. Making counseling a personal need, investing now to save later, will serve you and your relationships.

One of the most important things you can do is be HONEST. This may be difficult to do, but vulnerability in therapy will lead to greater progress.

How long will counseling take?

Everyone’s circumstances are unique. The length of time needed to reach your goals depends on your commitment, openness to feedback, and willingness to face tough questions.

Many clients report that after a few sessions they can see or feel a difference. I encourage (and I will ask for) feedback about how you think the therapy sessions are going. I want to hear what we could do differently.

Therapy isn’t forever. A common myth is that therapy goes on years. The length of the process will align with each unique client and therapy content. You are under no obligation to continue therapy. It is typically helpful for us to have a discussion about ending therapy and the closure process. This can be as simple as a brief phone call. It’s a great time to receive feedback and celebrate your change process.

What if I start to feel worse?

I’m worried that therapy will cause responses I can’t handle.

Yes, gaining self awareness about your inner world may be difficult. Being a vulnerable human is one of the riskiest things we do. However, this is a normal part of counseling. Therapy should feel different than sitting over coffee with a good friend.

Licensed counselors train for years and are able to help in specific ways. Counselors can help if you feel extra anxious or sad during the counseling process. It is always a great idea to discuss these issues with me, your licensed therapist, when they happen. Being open about hard feelings can bring be breakthroughs.
